Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp (dmcconline.org), a nonprofit charitable organization (“DMCC”), was recognized by the Hometown News in Port St. Lucie, FL for its efforts to teach South Florida students about credit, how it works and how to use it wisely. DMCC’s Education Department has been teaching high school and college students financial awareness since 2001. Teachers and students alike welcome the online lessons and the live seminars, as they know this information will be valuable for future years to come.
Each student at St. Lucie West Centennial High School took DMCC’s financial literacy program online; completing three modules every nine weeks, assigned as homework. They received a grade for the tests at the end of each module. The modules covered a variety of different subjects, from learning to use credit cards, to home loans, to understanding a credit report. Upon completion, DMCC presented the students with a certificate of completion to validate their newly acquired financial knowledge. “I didn’t know credit was that important; it’s something I need to pay attention to now,” said Christa, student at St. Lucie West Centennial High School. Jason Athas, manager of the education department at DMCC has presented this program to the Department of Education who are considering making it a part of every student’s curriculum. “We teach financial literacy throughout the state,” said Jason Athas, manager of educational programs at DMCC. “I have been teaching these classes at this school for about seven years.”
DMCC has been offering this program and presenting educational seminars to South Florida schools for over 10 years. Educators in high schools and colleges across South Florida are encouraged to take advantage of this free service.
